(See recipes page). We also welcomed a guest - Laura's mom all the way from Florida! On book selection night, we all bring books, or descriptions of books that we would like the group to discuss in the upcoming year. Well, this year we decided to keep all of the titles (unless they were not available through our library) because they all sounded so good. Enjoy! The Morsels met at Laura's house to discuss Claude and Camille, the story of Claude Monet as a young and struggling artist, and the love of his life Camille. Laura treated us to a DVD slideshow of her trip to Monet's Garden in Giverny, France - which was set to DeBussy's "Clair de Lune". Our feast included mini quiche, croque monsieur, crepes, chouquettes, goat cheese and tapenade, Kir Royale (served in flutes as tall as the champagne bottle!) and the piece de resistance, a Couer a la Creme (a heart shaped mold of creamy goodness, topped with fresh raspberries and a raspberry coulis)..
We had several coffee table type books with the works of Monet, and a to-scale pop-up book of the garden itself, Camille comes from a well-to-do family, yet gives up her lifestyle for the passionate artist. They live in poverty, often having to leave their home in the middle of the night, in order to avoid being evicted and losing everything. The story begins with Claude as an old man, who has just discovered a 40 year old letter from Camille's sister who holds him responsible for Camille's death. As we are led through the streets of Paris, and the countryside of France as we follow the lives of the the young Claude and his artist friends, which include Manet, Cezanne, Picasso and Bezille. The group was imporessed with how the group applauded each other's successes, and helped to motivate the other's. We learned about Imporessionism, and how it came to be. But most of all, we all enjoyed looking up the works of art that were unfamiliar to us. January 20 – The Tower, the Zoo and the Tortoise by Julia Stuart at Nancy S.’s

I think we were all a little surprised when Nancy S arrived late...and .in complete Austrian attire! Would you believe she still fits into her authentic Austrian drindl from the 70s?? Nancy studied for a semester in Vienna when she was in college. She experienced the Ringstrasse and the beauty of Vienna on a daily basis. Lucky Girl!!!
Nancy M shared a photo slideshow that she made on her Mac, and put to music. She went to Vienna last fall, and captured the most amazing pictures. We were also totally surprised by the response to the book itself. While we didn't seem to agree on whether it was a "good" book or not, we all agreed that it was great for discussion. It was certainly a wild ride of a book. OK - the website is still a work in progress. The plan is simply this. I will keep the booklist up to date, scan in all of the pages from 2 (yes 2!) + notebooks filled with our memories and link the scanned pages to the proper book, so that anyone can click on the title of a book to see what the Morsels thought. We've been recording our meetings for over 20 years, so there is a LOT of scanning ahead of me! Once I catch up with all of the books, I hope to add recipes and extras we've tucked into the notebooks (such as the crossword). And then - the toughest challenge. To add our bazillion pictures - all carefully labeled of course. Eventually the notebooks will then be retired, and we can post our reviews right to the website!
